Skin retouching
Smoothing and blemish removal are among the most common edits to ID photos, and the texture signal measures them.
Face shape
Slimming the face or enlarging the eyes shifts facial landmark proportions.
Background edges
Replaced or cleaned-up backgrounds can leave halos around the hair and shoulders.
AI generation
Some AI photo apps create a new face rather than editing yours. The impression and texture signals reflect this.
Before you submit
- Check the rules of the issuing authority. Many passport offices require photos without retouching or filters.
- Compare the photo with a plain phone snapshot taken in the same light.
- Look at the outline of your hair against the background for halos or cut-out edges.
What this is not
- Maat Scan is not an identity-verification or document-authentication service. It does not check documents, and a score does not mean any authority will accept or reject a photo.
- Printed and re-photographed pictures lose detail. Upload the original digital file.
- Some photo booths and studios apply automatic retouching, which can count as editing in the score.

Does a high score mean my passport photo will be accepted?
No. Acceptance depends on the issuing authority's rules on size, background, expression and lighting. The score only describes signs of editing or AI generation.
Does background replacement count as editing?
It can. Cut-out edges around the hair and shoulders affect the outline signal.
Is my photo stored?
Images are not stored on our servers on the free plan.
