What Maat Scan looks at
Overall impression
A vision model rates how the image reads as a whole: lighting, depth, and the slightly too-clean look many generated portraits share.
Skin texture
Generated and heavily filtered faces often have uniform skin without pores. Maat Scan measures fine texture across the face.
Outlines and background
Hair edges, ears, glasses and the background around the person are where generators and editing tools most often leave distortions.
Facial proportions
Landmark geometry checks whether the eyes, nose, mouth and jawline sit in natural proportion.
File metadata
Camera data and AI-generator markers in the file, when present. Photos saved from social media usually have none, so this signal stays neutral.
Checks you can do yourself
- Run a reverse image search, for example with Google Lens or TinEye, to find the earliest copy and its original context.
- Zoom in on hands, ears, teeth, jewellery and any text in the background. Generators still slip on small details.
- Look for Content Credentials. Some cameras and AI tools attach a C2PA record you can inspect at contentcredentials.org/verify.
- Compare with other photos of the same person, if any exist. Moles, scars and asymmetries are hard to reproduce consistently.
What the score can't tell you
- The score is a statistical description of the image, not proof. A low score does not prove a photo was generated or edited, and a high score does not guarantee it is untouched.
- Screenshots, heavy compression and very small images weaken the signals. Use the largest, earliest copy you can find.
- Maat Scan analyses still photos of people. Videos, illustrations, landscapes and objects are not scored.
- New image generators appear often, and the most recent ones can be difficult to distinguish.

Is it free?
Yes. You can run 3 scans without an account. Signing in with Google or Apple gives you 10 free scans every month.
Do you keep my photo?
Images are not stored on our servers on the free plan. Paid plans save a small thumbnail so you can see your scan history.
Does it only work on one AI tool?
No. Maat Scan looks for statistical traits common to AI-generated and edited portraits in general, rather than for one specific tool. Images from the newest models can be harder to score.
Why is the metadata signal often 50?
Most platforms remove camera metadata when a photo is uploaded. With no data to read, this signal is set to neutral.
