Smoothed skin
Retouching removes pores and fine lines. Maat Scan measures how much natural texture remains.
Bent backgrounds
Slimming a waist or jawline drags nearby pixels, so straight lines behind the person, such as tiles or door frames, bend.
Altered proportions
Enlarged eyes, narrowed noses and reshaped jaws shift facial landmark geometry away from natural ranges.
Editing software tags
When the file still carries metadata, Maat Scan reads it for editing-software information.
How to spot editing by eye
- Follow straight lines near the person. Curves that appear only next to the body are a classic sign of warp tools.
- Compare skin texture on the face with the neck and hands. Filters often stop at the face.
- Look at hair edges and jewellery for smudging.
- Check other photos from the same account, especially video or photos others have tagged.
What the score can't tell you
- Light, ordinary edits such as cropping, exposure or colour correction usually have little effect on the score.
- The score does not say which part of the photo was edited or by how much.
- Heavy compression can look like smoothing. Use the original file when you can.
- Please don't use a score to shame anyone. Many people edit their photos, and the score is a statistical reference.
