Traits of generated faces that Maat Scan measures
Skin that is too even
Real skin has pores, fine hair and uneven tone. Generated faces often render it as a smooth, uniform surface.
Idealised proportions
Generators tend toward symmetrical, idealised faces. Maat Scan maps facial landmarks and compares the geometry with natural faces.
Edges that don't resolve
Earrings that differ left to right, hair melting into the background, or glasses frames that bend are common around generated faces.
Studio-like rendering
A vision model assesses the lighting and depth of the whole portrait, including the soft glow common in generated headshots.
Where to look by eye
- Check both ears and any earrings. Mismatched pairs are a frequent generator error.
- Look at the background directly behind the head for warped lines or text that doesn't read.
- Look at the teeth and the hairline at the temples, where fine detail tends to blur.
- Reverse-search the image. A generated face usually has no history before its first appearance.
Limits to keep in mind
- A natural score does not show that a real person stands behind the photo. It describes the image, not the identity.
- Face-swap images put a real face into a new scene and can score differently from fully generated faces.
- Group photos and small or partly hidden faces give weaker signals. One clearly visible face works best.
- Scores are statistical. Use them as one input, not as a basis for accusing someone.

Can it tell which AI tool made the face?
No. Maat Scan scores how strongly the image shows signs of AI generation or editing. It does not identify the tool.
What score suggests a generated face?
Scores near 0 show strong signs of AI generation or editing, and scores near 100 look natural. Scores in the middle mean the signals are mixed, so treat them with extra caution.
Does it work on anime or illustrated faces?
No. Maat Scan is built for photographs of people. Illustrations are declined rather than scored, and the scan is not counted.
